Honest review of Godless Armageddon

by Scott Coon (Author)

In Scott Coon's Godless Armageddon, Thomas Jefferson Stoneshield VII, or Thom, faces a unique afterlife challenge. After dying in WWII, he finds himself a cloud-soul on a golden ocean, grappling with the legacy he failed to uphold and a deeply buried homosexuality. Blaming himself for the end of his family line, Thom discovers his father trapped within a monstrous "soul well," a being formed from captured souls. Unable to communicate directly, Thom utilizes weaponized memories, learning to combat these soul wells—beings threatening to unleash Armageddon on Earth. Joined by fellow soldier David Lowenstein, Thom battles not only these cosmic horrors, but also his own internal demons in a desperate attempt to save his father and atone for his perceived failures.

Review Godless Armageddon

Wow, "Godless Armageddon" is something else! I just finished reading it, and I'm still buzzing from the experience. It's not your typical afterlife story; it's a wild, imaginative ride that completely redefines what I thought was possible in the genre. The concept itself – souls as clouds battling in a cosmic war – is breathtakingly original, and Scott Coon executes it with a surprising amount of clarity. I never felt lost in the fantastical elements, even when things got truly bizarre.

What struck me most was the emotional depth. While the backdrop is this spectacular, surreal battle for the afterlife, the core of the story is intensely personal. Thom's journey of self-discovery, grappling with his repressed homosexuality while simultaneously fighting a godless Armageddon, is deeply moving. The exploration of his relationship with his father, complicated by war and unspoken feelings, adds another layer of poignancy. It’s a story about grief, regret, and the desperate search for redemption, all set against this incredibly vivid and unusual canvas.

The author masterfully balances the grand scale of the cosmic conflict with the intimate struggles of the characters. We see the horrors of WWII, the brutality of war, but then we’re whisked away to this ethereal plane where souls coalesce into breathtaking, vibrant storm-behemoths. This jarring contrast works incredibly well; it highlights the enduring power of human emotion, even in the face of the unbelievable. The shift between the gritty reality of wartime and the abstract beauty (and terror) of the afterlife never feels jarring or disjointed.

The characters themselves are compelling and relatable, despite the outlandish circumstances. Thom, in particular, is a fantastic protagonist – flawed, vulnerable, and utterly human in his quest for atonement. His internal struggle with his sexuality resonates deeply, and the way the author handles this theme feels both sensitive and powerful. The supporting characters are well-developed too; each adds to the richness of the story, and their individual motivations drive the plot forward.

I particularly appreciated the way the book explores themes of faith and the absence of God. The "godless" aspect isn't just a label; it's integral to the narrative, influencing the characters' actions and shaping the conflict. It's a refreshing take on the afterlife, avoiding typical religious tropes while still delving into profound questions about morality, purpose, and the meaning of existence.

Overall, "Godless Armageddon" is a book that stays with you long after you've finished reading it. It's a unique blend of action, emotion, and philosophical inquiry, all wrapped up in a beautifully crafted, incredibly imaginative story. It's ambitious, yes, but it succeeds brilliantly. If you're looking for something truly original, something that will challenge your perceptions and leave you thinking, this is definitely a book you should pick up. Highly recommended!
